More and more people are finding laptops to be great alternatives for their computer usage needs. As the technology continues to improve, laptops are fast becoming as powerful as desktop PCs. But the area where laptops excel is with their portability. Unlike a desktop PC, a laptop can easily be carried around and stashed in a bag for traveling. In order for a laptop to be very portable, certain computer parts had to be miniaturized and redesigned. One of the most obvious parts is the unique design of laptop LCDs. Unlike PC monitors, laptop LCDs are made to be thin and light so as to make it lighter and easier to carry. There are several choices for laptop manufacturers as to what type of flat panel display they will use for their machines. The most common option for laptop LCDs are the active matrix liquid display laptop LCDs. Manufacturers prefer the active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) laptop LCDs due to their minimal weight, their excellent image quality, their ability to handle a wide range of colors and their quick response time compared to other flat panel display options. The most common of laptop LCDs employ thin film transistors or TFTs in order to create the picture that it presents to the user. A single TFT LCD contains a number of TFT devices in its display face. Each of these TFT devices is electrically excited to generate a pixel color. Taken as a whole, the totality of TFT devices on the LCD screen of the laptop represents a single picture. TFT laptop LCDs are highly preferable to laptop users. Physically, TFT laptop LCDs are lighter than their competition, are more solid and they provide a sharper and brighter display. There are several active matrix liquid display laptop LCDs in the market these days. Each specific type of these laptop LCDs are usually designated to with a unique display resolution. The display resolution of laptop LCDs refer to the number of pixels that can be found on the screen. Laptop LCDs with a higher display resolution have more pixels on them. They are therefore able to display pictures more crisply and clearly than laptop LCDs with lower resolutions. Buyers of laptops who are particular about the display capabilities of their units need to be aware of several specifications of their laptop's LCD. The screen resolution has been previously discussed. The "Dot Pitch" is measured as the distance between each of the pixels on the screen. The lesser the "Dot Pitch" size, the sharper will be the image displayed. The size of the viewable area of the LCD panel is also an important consideration. This is measured diagonally, from one corner of the LCD to the furthest corner from it. The "response time" of laptop LCDs determine how fast an LCD display can change the pixel's color and brightness characteristics. A faster "response time" makes display transitions smoother. It is also important to consider the video ports that are available. Video ports can be useful when it is necessary to share the display of the laptop with an external video display. |
